Mother (DJ)
Mark Maxwell (Mother) is one of those lifers whose insatiable love, curiosity and dedication to music has inspired and nourished the Glasgow scene and beyond for over two decades. He’s one of the best DJs in the city – full stop end of sentence.
Mark is one of main staff at Glasgow institution Rubadub and cut teeth working on John Peel’s legendary radio show. He has two labels – Heated Heads and Concrete Cabin – and he’s contributed mixes for Trilogy Tapes, L.I.E.S, Dummy and many more. Last year he released “Jungle Warfare”, his first solo musical outing, compromised of a series of “compositions” for – or, more accurately, from – the E-MU E6400 Ultra & Roland VP-9000 Variphrase Processor samplers, featuring additional DSP from the Eventide H90 Harmonizer. It’s great – check it out here.
We’ve welcomed Mark before to Counterflows where he opened for Mark Ernestus’ Ndagga Rhythm Force, but this time we’ll have him in the club. Techno, house, jungle, drum and bass, dub, reggae, dancehall and experimental music are the genres you’ll find him working in most, but what he’ll play for us is still unknown. What makes his sets ‘click’ is his knowledge and deft hand – steering dancers through entangled histories in underground with the sort of patience and rigour that can feel a bit lost in today’s multi-genre landscape. Tantric can be an embarassing word, but his sets feel exactly that, sculpted for full ‘locking in’ and dancefloor wonder.
